Nutrition and Oral Health – the complex and bi-directional relationships

Dr Emma Beckett

There are some obvious links between oral health and nutrition… eating, sugars, microbes, plaque, dental caries, minerals. But the links between oral health and nutrition are much more complex. Genetics, our other senses such as taste and smell, gut bacteria and the impact of the health of our other organ systems are now also being considered. The impact of diet may even start prior to birth or even conception, with the developmental origins of complex diseases now unfolding, maternal and paternal diets may impact later outcomes for offspring, including oral health.
